Tuesday will be a tense day for the riders: each competitor will race alone on a flat, 28.6 km course with just one moderate climb. But the last kilometer contains a section of cobblestones, always potentially dangerous. A successful effort could end in ruin with one slip of the wheel or a flat tire.

Spectator Sipping Suggestion: Azienda Agricola Carmignani Montecarlo Rosso DOC
Fattoria Enzo Carmignani has been part of the Montecarlo village since 1386. Its history dates back to ancient times in wine and extra virgin olive oil production, devoting attention and respect to traditional methods of production, especially the use of native grape varieties.
Today Elena Carmignani – together with her husband Mauro – takes care of the production, combining traditions with modern techniques, searching for excellence in their vines. The property offers wine and olive oil tastings on site, and has two apartments available for those who want to do a deep dive into the region.

Montecarlo Rosso is made from six different varieties: Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malvasia Nera. The grapes are fermented at a temperature between 28°C and 30°C for 12-14 days. Afterward, the wine rests in stainless steel vats for 6 -7 months and then another 3-4 months in the bottle.

The wine is very fragrant, with aromas of cherry, rose and raspberry. On the palate it has good structure, with a mix of red and black fruit, moderate acidity, and smooth tannins. It pairs well with most meat dishes, and is traditionally paired with Tordelli Lucchesi, moon-shaped stuffed pasta filled with a blend of meat, mortadella, cheese, and herbs.
