2026 Tour de France Stage 11: Let’s Celebrate the Sprinters with a Sparkling Wine from the Loire Valley!

If you didn’t watch Stage 10 on Tuesday, you really missed something. A bear of a day with seven categorized climbs, it had a bit of everything: leg-breaking ascents followed by death-defying plunges followed by crashes; and a display of total dominance by You-Know-Who.

Check out the highlights here:

Wednesday’s race will be another matter entirely: a relatively flat route that favors the sprinters. Will Tim Merlier rack up another victory? Or will Mads Pedersen or (finally) Jasper Philipsen claim the day? With so few stages dedicated to the fast men, this one will be hotly contested.

Wine Recommendation: 2022 Domaine François Chidaine Méthode Traditionelle Brut Nature ($36; 12.5% abv)

This wine hails from the Montouis-sur-Loire appellation, at the intersection of the Loire and Cher Rivers, at the eastern edge of the Loire Valley. It’s 100% Chenin Blanc, farmed biodynamically; vines range in age from 10 to 50 years old. Soils are a complex mix of clay and flint, underpinned by tuffeau, a soft, white limestone rock.

Grapes are processed via pneumatic press, followed by a long, slow fermentation (up to six months) via indigenous yeasts in demi-muids (620-liter wood barrels.) The second fermentation occurs in the bottle, and the wine rests on its lees for six to eight months.

Tasting Notes and Pairing Suggestions

Pale lemon color with lively fruit aromas (apple, pear, and lemon) complemented by a sweet-savory note of honey. Let it open for a while, and you’ll pick up flinty-smoky notes. On the palate it’s tart and tangy, with bright green apple flavors, a little white peach, and a hint of that honey on the finish. Refreshing and delicious!

We sipped this as an apéritif with a bowl of roasted pistachios and a mild goat cheese. But I think it would be awesome with a pâté de foie gras spread on white toast.

Have fun watching Stage 11; more to come tomorrow before Stage 12!

  1. Love Chidaine’s wines yet haven’t sipped this Crémant to date… with pistachios, yum. Off to capture the replay, thanks for the link!
